Royal families compared: British royal couples wait longer than other houses to produce heir

Auf einen Blick

  • Harry and Meghan’s romance more typical of European than British royals
  • British royal couples take on average three years to have their first child after becoming engaged, longer than any other European royal household
  • Swedish royals wait less than a year between walking down the aisle and having first child
  • Belgian and Spanish royals fastest to marry following engagement

Berlin, Germany. 20 March 2019. From the outside it looks like a whirlwind romance, and it is true to say that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reached relationship milestones quicker than other British royal couples.

With the royal birth on the horizon, dating app Jaumo (www.jaumo.com) analysed ten royal houses including the British, Spanish, Swedish and Dutch, to see which ones jump headfirst into parenthood and which dynasties take things slower.

Meghan and Harry waited 173 days between officially announcing their engagement and saying their vows, comparable to the British royal average of 158 days and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s 164 days. This is considerably less than the Monaco royals, who leave a one year breathing period, and the Dutch, who wait 377 days. The Belgians jump in fastest, waiting just 118 days.

But while William and Kate waited two years and three months to have Prince George, Meghan and Harry have not wasted any time on that front.

Meghan is due to give birth to her first child in April 2019, less than a year after her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. In that way they are more similar to the Danish, Norwegian and Luxembourgish royals, who get to babymaking faster than their British cousins.

British royal couples usually wait an average of 1008 days, or 2.76 years, between marriage and their first child, or 1166 days between getting engaged and having their first child, longer than any other European royal household.

The Spanish and Norwegian royals also like to take things slowly, waiting on average 979 days and 977 days respectively. The Swedish royals, meanwhile, are impatient to get things going, waiting on average just 603 days.

The data for British royals looked at the marriage of Queen Elizabeth, Princes Charles, Andrew and Edward, and Princesses Anne and Eugenie, among others.

Jens Kammerer, CEO of Jaumo, commented on the analysis: “Some parts of the relationship happen very quickly, as the love story of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shows- getting to know each other, becoming engaged, then marrying quickly, but waiting until the spring of 2019 to start a family. Other royal couples, however, can take more or less time at each stage, as our analysis shows. Our users have a bit of an easier time with Jaumo: Getting to know each other, flirting and dating happens as quickly or as slowly as our users want – without any pressure or time constraints.”
