Just 30% of people would date a transgender person
Berlin, Germany. 17 January 2019. Awareness of transgender issues has improved in recent years, while public figures like Caitlyn Jenner have spoken out openly about their transition experiences.
But transgender people still face discrimination, and the dating world is no exception. Dating app Jaumo (www.jaumo.com) surveyed its users to find out how open they are to the idea of becoming romantically involved with a transgender person.
40,000 users from several nationalities answered, with results showing that despite the growing acceptance of transgender people, the majority are still closed to the idea of dating a transgender person.
The results show that 34% of all men and just 14% of women surveyed internationally were open to the idea. This means that only 30% of all people surveyed would consider the prospect.
The results were taken from users in Britain, France, the US, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Canada. In the European countries, men were more open than women to the idea of dating a transgender person, while the reverse was the case in the USA and Canada.
Among British respondents, 41% of men and 33% of women, or 39% overall, responded positively, compares with 37% of men and 40% of women in the United States. The results for Canada show 33% of men and 57% of women would consider it.
Respondents in Germany were least open to the idea, with just 14% of women and 27% of men responding affirmatively.
An Ipsos poll from 2018 revealed that 75% of people in Britain believe trans people should be able to marry a person of their birth sex, with 68% of respondents in the US and 64% of Australians agreeing.
